What If I'm Not Photogenic? The Truth About Looking Good in Photos
"Annie, I never like photos of myself."
I've heard that sentence more times than I can count.
Sometimes it's, "You have your work cut out for you." Or, "I have no idea what I'm doing." And every once in a while, someone jokes, "I hope I don't break your camera!" If you've ever thought something similar, you're definitely not alone. In fact, most of the people you see on my website started their session feeling nervous, awkward, or convinced they weren't photogenic.
The good news?
Looking great in photos has far less to do with being naturally photogenic than most people think.
The reality is that professional headshots aren't just for models, influencers, or people who love being in front of a camera. They're for business owners, professionals and everyday people who need to show up online and build trust with potential clients. And most of those people aren't spending their weekends practicing poses in front of a mirror.
That's why choosing the right photographer matters. A great headshot isn't about being naturally photogenic. It's about working with a photographer who knows how to bring out your best features, guide you into flattering poses, and help you feel comfortable enough for your personality to come through.
The goal isn't to make you look like someone else. The goal is to create a photograph that looks like you on your very best day. That's exactly why coaching is such an important part of every session I photograph.
Let me show you what I mean.
Before any posing guidance. Nothing is wrong with this photo, but there is still room to create more confidence, connection, and personality.
Just a few minutes later. Small adjustments to posture, body angle, chin position, and expression create a huge difference in how confident and approachable someone appears.
The finished image. Same person. Same outfit. Same day. The difference isn't being "photogenic", t's having guidance throughout the process.
Why You Probably Aren't Seeing Yourself Accurately
One thing I've noticed after photographing hundreds of business owners is that we're often our own worst critics. We notice every wrinkle, every stray hair, every angle we don't like. We know exactly what we wish looked different, so that's where our eyes go first. But guess what? Nobody else sees us that way!
When someone meets you, they're paying attention to your smile, your energy, your confidence, and how you make them feel. They're not analyzing your face the way you do. A camera can also be very unforgiving if not careful. Bad lighting, an awkward angle, a rushed snapshot, or a poorly timed expression can make almost anyone dislike a photo of themselves. That doesn't mean you can’t look good, it just means the photo wasn't showing you at your best.
That's where professional guidance makes all the difference.
This is how most people start. A little nervous and not quite sure what to do.
A few simple adjustments later. Better posture, a more flattering angle, and a genuine smile begin to come through.
The final Edit. Confident, approachable, and still completely herself.
Sometimes The Best Photo Isn't The One You Expect
One thing many people don't realize is that we often judge ourselves far more harshly than everyone else does. During image selection, clients frequently point out things nobody else would ever notice. Sometimes it simply takes slowing down and seeing yourself through a different lens.
Reviewing images together is part of the process. Sometimes it helps to have a second set of eyes to see what everyone else already sees.
People looking at your headshot aren't seeing what you're seeing. They're not studying every tiny detail or looking for flaws. They're forming an overall impression of who you are and whether you seem approachable, confident, and trustworthy. Meanwhile, you're over there wondering why one eyebrow looks slightly different than the other.
That's why I help you choose the best images during the selection process. You're not sent home with hundreds of photos and left to figure it out on your own. We review the images together and narrow them down to the photographs that best represent you and your business. And honestly? Some of my clients are surprised by which images become their favorites. The photo they thought they wouldn't like often ends up being the one they choose because it feels the most authentic. The one that looks the most like them.
The Bottom Line
I've never had someone walk into my studio and say, "It’s your lucky day, Annie! I'm extremely photogenic and absolutely love the camera."
Most people are nervous. Most people don't know what to do. Most people are convinced they won't like their photos. And yet, those same people regularly leave with images they can't wait to use.
And if you're still convinced you're the exception, I'd love the opportunity to prove you wrong.
